Film Review: The Story Of “Divergent”

“Divergent” is a game that helps you find your place and determine how you fit into the world as you move from adolescence into adulthood. Each year, 16-year-olds have to select a group. They are forced to choose a faction for life. Beatrice’s test (Maggie Q), warns Beatrice to keep her hearing diagnosis a secret, as it threatens the status quo.

Divergents is the term used to describe people who don’t fall into a specific category. They’re viewed as being dangerous. They have been expelled. Shailene is Woodley, who plays Tris. She’s a young girl selected by destiny to rebel against the rigid castes. In the mandatory testing, she’s classified as “divergent”. She doesn’t belong to any of the five groups that have co-existed in what is left of humanity after a 100 year apocalyptic conflict. Woodley’s delicate acting is compelling. She shows you how a bold, if initially prickly personality can be hidden within a humble, bookish, girl who doesn’t like to fight. Tris joins Dauntless because it’s in her nature to risk. Tris’s tendency to take risks is evident in the first part of Divergent. She jumps on speeding trains or fights with her bare fingertips. After Tris becomes a member of Dauntless and jumps onto the rooftops and into buildings, this is one of the best scenes in Divergent. Chicago is instantly recognizable, but when you move closer to the action, it appears that there’s something different about the city. It has rust on its buildings. You might first think that everyone has died. There are still people living there in this strange new society. The majority of Tris’ training takes place in the “Pit”, a gym that looks like it was built in the 80s, with walls for rock climbing. Eric, played by Jai Courtney, is in charge of the brutal training. Eric promises that those who don’t make it will become a person on the streets without any faction. Tris’ deputy, Four, is a courageous hunk who has Tris’ back. Both enjoy a fantastic journey as they fight for truth and escape that will bind Chicago’s future.

I find “Divergent”, a wonderful series, about the journey from childhood to adulthood and how your choices in life shape your personality. This movie teaches you that life’s trials can teach you a lot. This series is a great way to brighten up a bad day. Worth watching.
